By early 2007, China had more mobile telephone subscribers than the combined population of the US and Japan. It produces enough handsets annually for the entire population of the EU.
Media & Technology
The market
China’s telecommunications, media and technology (TMT) sectors are a hot-spot for global venture capital investment. The country is ranked first worldwide in subscribers to mobile phones, fixed telephones and cable TV, and second for Internet users. In 2006, there were 79 mergers and acquisitions in TMT-related companies alone, 45 of which involved a total capital of more than US$2 billion. The TMT sector accounts for 90% of all Chinese overseas listed companies and with 3G mobile technology on the horizon, this dynamic sector is just starting to crack its potential.
How we can help you access this market
The Balloch Group’s work in this sector tends to most often involve our investment banking team. We work with Chinese companies that are looking to prepare for the IPO or are seeking investors. Together with our partner, CIBC World markets, we have been involved in dozens of Chinese company listings on the New York Stock Exchange and NASDAQ. We have originated some of these deals for CIBC and offered other types of support in others. In 2007, CIBC and TBG participated in a near majority of the Chinese listings on the U.S. market. Our abilities in this sector, however, are not limited to the investment banking side. We offer our full range of services to foreign companies seeking a Chinese investor or a Chinese investment opportunity. Likewise, we assist Chinese companies that are seeking to expand production overseas or are on the hunt for a strategic or financial investor. Our clients and success stories pages provide more information on our achievements in this sector. Or, you can contact us directly to learn more about what we can do for your firm.
