Mining, Oil & Gas
The mining sector
It is now widely known internationally that China cannot domestically produce the resources it needs to build the infrastructure, consumer products, houses and trinkets that its population now demands. The government has directed its firms to look abroad, not just to diversify the resource base in general, but also to ensure a better supply should conflict arise in any particular geographical area. Meanwhile, the domestic mining sector is undergoing massive change, consolidating smaller, less efficient suppliers into firms that will eventually be world leaders. Chinese mining firms are now beginning to list on the TSX venture exchange, AIM in London, and in Hong Kong.
How we can help you access the mining sector
Our mining practice leverages our knowledge of China, expertise in the mining sector and our mining and financial networks worldwide. We are uniquely placed to bridge the gap between foreign companies and their Chinese counterparts because of our experience and the network of connections we have built. We have two main sets of clients for our mining services: Chinese companies looking to acquire assets overseas, and foreign firms looking to invest in China. We help our international clients to identify potential targets in China, and to explore different possibilities for their presence here. We are also experienced in matching up foreign firms with Chinese investors, a transaction where we can act for either side. Our clients and success stories pages provide more information on our achievements in the mining sector. Or, you can contact us directly to learn more about what we can do for your firm.
The oil & gas sector
China’s rapid industrialization has transformed it from a net oil exporter in 1993 to one that imports almost half its oil and natural gas today. Although the country has goals to double its dependence on renewable energy sources, oil and gas (and coal) will continue to form the backbone of the energy supply. As such, there is a huge market for technology related to the sector, not to mention energy suppliers. China’s leading energy companies travel the globe, spending billions of dollars acquiring oil and gas reserves and energy related companies. Independent oil companies have also invested into offshore properties in China under production sharing agreements.
